The ETA Is Still Required Online Before Travel But Is Now Completely Free. Sri Lanka’s Department Of Immigration And Emigration Has Extended The Fee Waiver To Pakistan, India, The UAE, Saudi Arabia, The US, The UK, China, Japan, Australia And Canada Among Others
According to MM News, Pakistan Today and Sri Lanka’s official Department of Immigration and Emigration, Sri Lanka has waived tourist visa fees for citizens of 40 countries including Pakistan, effective May 25, 2026. Pakistani passport holders along with nationals of India, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, the United States, the United Kingdom, China, Japan, Australia, and Canada can now obtain a free Electronic Travel Authorisation for a 30-day stay with a double-entry facility permitted within the validity period.
The fee waiver does not remove the ETA requirement entirely. Travellers must still apply for and receive ETA approval online through Sri Lanka’s official portal before departure. Holders of diplomatic, official, service, and ordinary passports from all 40 designated nations are eligible. Visitors wishing to stay beyond 30 days can apply for an extension, though standard extension fees will apply. Any ETA fees paid before May 25, 2026 are non-refundable under the new scheme.
Cabinet spokesman Nalinda Jayatissa confirmed that the proposal was originally approved at a cabinet meeting on July 21, 2025. The initiative is part of Sri Lanka’s ongoing effort to revive its tourism sector following its 2022 economic crisis, with tourism remaining the country’s primary source of foreign exchange earnings. Officials expect the fee waiver to significantly boost inbound visitor numbers from all 40 designated markets.
