US stocks rose on Monday, September 20, as oil prices and Treasury yields slipped, with Wall Street looking to recover from a mostly lower week. The S&P 500 climbed 0.6%, the Nasdaq Composite gained 0.9%, and the Dow Jones Industrial Average added 153 points, or 0.3%. Brent crude slid 3% to above $100 a barrel, while WTI fell 3% to above $96 a barrel, marking a fourth straight day of declines, the longest such streak in three months. CNBC

S&P 500 futures had advanced 0.6% and Nasdaq 100 contracts rose 0.8% as technology stocks led gains across regions. Treasury bonds climbed across the curve. China’s Vice Premier He Lifeng met with US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent in New York on September 20, with Bessent describing the meeting as “successful.”

Last week, the Dow slid 1.7% for its worst performance since March, while the S&P 500 was off about 0.1%. Only the tech-heavy Nasdaq posted a gain, up 0.7%, as the Federal Reserve’s first rate hike in three years weighed on sentiment. The 10-year Treasury yield climbed to 5.00%, and the VIX retreated over 4% on Monday as investor sentiment stabilised.

Year-to-date, all three major indices remain higher, on track for their fourth straight annual gain, the Dow’s longest such streak since 2014, the S&P 500’s since 2007, and the Nasdaq’s since 2017. Energy leads sector performance in 2026, while consumer discretionary lags.
