Toyota GR GT: Twin-Turbo V8, All-Aluminium Space Frame, Brembo Carbon-Ceramic Brakes And A Driving Philosophy Borrowed Directly From Le Mans. Japan Just Answered Ferrari And Porsche
According to Toyota Gazoo Racing, the GR GT was fully unveiled at its world premiere on December 5, 2025, positioned as a flagship model in the footsteps of the Toyota 2000GT and the Lexus LFA, with production starting around 2027.
What Toyota has built is not simply the company’s next performance car. It is a tradition of renewal; what Toyota internally calls “Shikinen Sengu” in which essential car-making skills are preserved and passed from veterans to the next generation of engineers. The skills that built the LFA have been handed down. The GR GT is what those skills produced in 2025.
The engineering inside the car deserves careful attention, because almost every major system on it was designed from scratch with a singular priority: the driver.
The GR GT is powered by Toyota’s first 90-degree bank angle 3,998cc twin-turbocharged V8 engine, using a hot-vee configuration with two turbochargers within the bank, a port and direct-injection system, a dry-sump lubrication system and a thinner oil pan. The engine produces a maximum system output of 650PS and 850Nm of torque when combined with a transaxle-integrated single-motor hybrid system.
Power is transmitted to the rear transaxle via a torque tube made of carbon fibre reinforced plastic, and the transaxle integrates a motor-generator, a newly developed rear-mounted eight-speed automatic transmission using a wet start clutch that eliminates the torque converter, and a mechanical limited-slip differential.
The GR GT marks Toyota’s first use of an all-aluminium space frame. Body panels are made of carbon fibre-reinforced plastic and aluminium. Chasing weight reduction is crucial in a car such as this. As you drop the weight, so many aspects of performance improve. You wind up with a lower centre of gravity, better handling, and the aerodynamic elements can perform their job more effectively.
The adoption of a rear transaxle and optimal placement of heavy items such as the drive battery and fuel tank resulted in a front-to-rear weight distribution of 45:55. That number is not accidental. It is the result of engineers deciding exactly where every kilogram should sit.
The GR GT has an overall length of 4,820mm, a wheelbase of 2,725mm, a width of 2,000mm and a height of just 1,195mm, leaving it shorter than both the Porsche 911 GTS and the Chevrolet Corvette E-Ray. The suspension employs low-mounted double wishbone systems with forged aluminium arms developed from scratch, and the standard tyres are Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2, developed specifically for the car.
The brakes use Brembo carbon-ceramic discs front and rear. The top speed is rated at over 320 km/h. With the electric motor filling in torque at low rpm, there should be almost no turbo lag. Just a long, strong power band suitable for both long straights and short bursts out of corners.
The car’s aerodynamic story is equally ambitious. Aerodynamic engineers who worked on cars competing in the FIA World Endurance Championship were involved in the GR GT’s development, and the vehicle packaging was determined based on an “aerodynamic model” representing the ideal form proposed by the aerodynamic design team; a departure from conventional development where exterior styling is set before aerodynamic considerations.
On the GR GT, aerodynamics came first. Styling followed.
The car lacks Toyota badging, emphasising its position as a pure GR product. It will be sold exclusively through select Lexus dealerships. That decision is not simply a retail strategy. It is a statement about where the GR GT sits in the global performance hierarchy alongside the Lexus LFA in heritage, and alongside the Ferrari 296 GTB and McLaren Artura in ambition.
What the GR GT means for global car culture is harder to quantify but no less significant. Japan has produced iconic performance cars in waves. The GT-R, the LFA, the NSX but none that placed Toyota’s own racing division at the centre of the narrative. The GR GT, GR GT3 and Lexus LFA Concept were born from the conviction of Toyota Chairman Akio Toyoda that certain car-making skills must be preserved and passed to the next generation.
That conviction produces something that no press release can entirely capture: the sense that a manufacturer is building a car because it cannot bear not to.
The GR GT is set to make its debut in 2026 not on a showroom floor but in the world of gaming, as the cover car for Forza Horizon 6. The artwork shows a red GR GT in a quintessentially Japanese setting with a backdrop of Mount Fuji and cherry blossoms. The GR GT Prototype is the hero cover car and also the car players drive during the Initial Experience (the first 10 minutes of the game), almost as a prelude to the full world.
Forza Horizon 6 is set in Japan, and the studio’s meticulous data capture ensures the hybrid twin-turbo V8, front-mid engine balance and aerodynamic focus all translate convincingly into the game’s landscapes, from Tokyo cityscapes to mountain passes.
That decision to debut in gaming before reaching showrooms is more deliberate than it might appear. Toyota has stated that Forza Horizon 6 gives players the opportunity to experience the GR GT months before physical units hit the streets, creating a sense of connection and enabling players to feel their own tie to the GR brand.
Millions of players worldwide will drive the GR GT, learn its shape and hear its V8 before the first customer ever sits in one. That is not marketing in the traditional sense. It is cultural penetration at a scale no physical launch event could replicate.
The cover car of the world’s most played racing franchise, set in Japan, is a Japanese supercar that does not yet exist in production form. That sentence would have seemed extraordinary ten years ago.
Today it is simply Toyota doing what Toyota decided it needed to do. The GR GT will arrive in showrooms around 2027. The world already knows its name.
