Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman Reports The $3,499 Vision Pro Successor Needs A Slimmer Design And A Lower Price Before Apple Can Return As Former Vision Products Group Members Are Reassigned To The Smart Glasses Project
According to MacRumors, citing Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman in his Power On newsletter, Apple is still developing a cheaper and lighter successor to the Vision Pro, but it is unlikely to launch before late 2028 or 2029.
Gurman describes the Vision Pro category as essentially “on ice” until Apple solves two structural problems; a slimmer form factor and a meaningfully lower price point than the current $3,499 device.
The report specifically distinguishes this successor from the previously rumoured “Vision Air”; a lighter standalone headset that was cancelled in 2025. The new successor is a direct evolution of the Vision Pro line, not a budget device. Separately, Apple refreshed the existing Vision Pro in October 2025 with an M5 chip.
The more immediate pivot is toward smart glasses. Former Vision Products Group members have been reassigned to that project, which Gurman reports is targeting a late 2027 launch; a far more aggressive timeline than the Vision Pro follow-up. Apple’s spatial computing roadmap is now two-track: smart glasses first, Vision Pro successor when the engineering challenges of weight and price are solved.
