From Typhoon Jangmi Travelling Across Okinawa To Honshu, From The Western Mediterranean To Southern Australia. June 1, 2026 Joins The Growing List Of Days On Which The World’s Major Climate Systems Are Breaking Simultaneously And In The Same Direction
According to The Guardian and the Japan Meteorological Agency, Typhoon Jangmi was located approximately 90 kilometres south-southwest of Naha on June 1, advancing north at 20 kilometres per hour with a central pressure of 975 hPa, maximum sustained winds of 30 metres per second, and gusts reaching 45 metres per second.
The JMA warns that rainfall totals in affected regions could reach 200 to 300 millimetres, with southern islands including Okinawa and Amami recording 300mm by noon on June 2. The typhoon is expected to impact large areas along Japan’s Pacific coast between Kyushu and Kanto, including Tokyo, through June 3.
Jangmi’s rapid intensification results from warm Western Pacific sea-surface temperatures of 29 to 30 degrees Celsius combined with low wind shear at mid-tropospheric levels. The storm is the sixth typhoon of a 2026 Pacific season that climate scientists have flagged as running significantly ahead of historical norms in intensity.
Simultaneously, the World Meteorological Organisation has warned there is a 75% chance that average global temperatures between 2026 and 2030 will exceed 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels with an 86% chance that at least one of those years will become the hottest on record. Europe is recording early-summer temperature anomalies, while Australia faces simultaneous extreme weather pressure entering its southern hemisphere winter.
