According to Futurism, Anthony Chavez, a 78-year-old retired HVAC technician, went missing in May 2025 after reportedly assisting a quantum physicist at the Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico. His car, wallet, cigarettes and handwritten journal were recovered at his home, but Chavez himself has not been found.
Investigative journalist Lauren Conlin told NewsNation that Chavez had been working on quantum physics experiments investigating the concept of “matter existing in two places simultaneously”; a reference to quantum superposition. Police documentation obtained by Los Angeles Magazine confirmed the details of his disappearance.
The case drew renewed attention after a House Oversight Committee announced in April 2026 it was seeking information from the Department of Energy, the FBI and NASA about a string of roughly a dozen scientists who “have died or mysteriously vanished in recent years”; many with connections to US nuclear secrets or rocket technology.
Chavez’s disappearance also came just five weeks before Los Alamos administrative assistant Melissa Casias went missing. Her remains were found in a New Mexico national forest in June 2026, though authorities found no evidence linking the two cases.
To be clear: there is no evidence that quantum superposition swallowed Anthony Chavez. The science of qubits and the science of making a 78-year-old man disappear are not the same thing. But the confluence of disappearances, a secretive national laboratory, and a Congressional investigation into missing scientists means the internet and now Congress, refuses to let this go.
