2026 Is the Worst Early Start for West Nile in Los Angeles in 20 Years and the Highest Midyear CDC Count in 22 Years. Long Beach Records California’s First Human Case, a Neuroinvasive Hospitalisation
According to New York Post, West Nile virus has been detected in mosquito samples from 13 Orange County cities, with 38 mosquito samples testing positive for the virus this season; more than double the 18 positive samples reported just one week earlier.
The Orange County Mosquito and Vector Control District is preparing truck-mounted mosquito control treatments in a 4.5-square-mile area of Fullerton, which accounts for 15 of the county’s 38 positive samples.
Officials said 2026 is the worst early-season start for West Nile virus in Los Angeles County since 2004. The Greater Los Angeles County Vector Control District has also confirmed 38 positive mosquito pools this season, with active surveillance across the region.
Long Beach city officials confirmed California’s first human case of West Nile virus in 2026; a person who was hospitalised with neuroinvasive illness and has since been recovering at home. A second case was later confirmed in Sacramento County.
Nationally, the CDC confirmed 48 human West Nile cases across 23 states as of June 30, 2026; 38 of which were neuroinvasive, representing the highest midyear count in more than two decades. Four deaths have been reported, all in Arizona’s Maricopa County.
There is no vaccine or specific treatment for West Nile virus. The best protection is to dump standing water around your home, use insect repellent containing DEET, and wear long sleeves at dawn and dusk. Cases typically peak in August and September; the worst of the 2026 season is still ahead.
