The Iranian Rial Hits An All-Time Record Low As The Dollar Breaks 192,800 Tomans In Tehran’s Free Market On July 18

The Iranian Rial Hits An All-Time Record Low: With Non-Oil GDP Contracting 0.3% In 2025 And The Pound And Euro Also Surging, Iran’s Currency Crisis Reflects A Deep Structural Collapse Compounded By War

According to Voice of Emirates, the US dollar reached 192,800 tomans in Iran’s free market on Saturday July 18, 2026; an all-time record that broke the previous high of 190,000 tomans set on May 4 and reflects the compounding effects of military escalation, economic stagnation and eroding public confidence in Iran’s currency.

The surge was not confined to the dollar. The British pound jumped to 257,650 tomans and the euro surpassed 219,000 tomans in a broad rally of foreign currencies against the rial that analysts describe as a collapse in confidence in the local currency.

Separately, data released by the Iranian Statistics Centre reveals the economy nearly stagnated in 2025. GDP at constant prices including oil revenues stood at 100.492 trillion rials, up just 0.2% from 100.281 trillion rials the previous year. Excluding the oil sector, the picture is considerably worse: non-oil GDP fell to 75.942 trillion rials from 76.161 trillion rials; a contraction of 0.3%.

Iran is fighting a war on two fronts simultaneously: military strikes from the US and Israel, and an internal economic unravelling that predates this conflict by years. The currency rate tells you which side of those two battles is currently winning. When the dollar costs 192,800 tomans, the government’s ability to import essentials, service any foreign obligations, and contain domestic inflation is under simultaneous strain. The war complicates an already broken economic picture.
