A $2.2 Billion NOAA Budget Cut Eliminates All Research Labs, Shuts Down A $20 Million AI Forecasting Institute And Reduces Data Collection While AI Models Already Missed The February 2026 Blizzard
According to The Guardian, experts are warning that the Trump administration’s plan to embrace AI weather forecasting while simultaneously cutting the data and research infrastructure those models depend on is fundamentally self-defeating and dangerous.
The White House has proposed a $2.2 billion reduction to NOAA’s overall budget, cutting the agency’s funding by approximately 40 per cent. The cuts would eliminate NOAA’s entire research arm, including its network of cooperative research institutes and laboratories.
The National Science Foundation has also ended its five-year $20 million grant for the AI Institute for Research on Trustworthy AI in Weather, Climate, and Coastal Oceanography; a pipeline for scientists trained specifically in AI-based weather forecasting.
The contradiction at the centre of the policy is stark. Former NOAA official Monica Medina warned: “We absolutely need AI to help us crunch the data faster. But right now, what we’re doing is cutting back the data collection; we’re going in the wrong direction.” Forensic meteorologist Chris Gloninger added that AI models were trained on “a climate that no longer exists” meaning they already underperform on the record-breaking extreme weather events that are becoming routine.
AI-based models failed to predict the July 2025 Texas floods and conventional models outperformed AI during the February 2026 northeastern blizzard. Accurate forecasts help families evacuate ahead of hurricanes, warn workers about dangerous heat, and protect airline and shipping routes. If the data feeding those models is cut, communities will have less time to prepare for the next disaster.
You cannot build a smarter weather system by defunding the sensors that feed it data. The administration’s logic; embrace AI outputs while eliminating AI inputs is not a technology policy. It is a budget cut dressed up as innovation.
