Rawalpindi Ring Road Complete but Opening Delayed by Unfinished Toll Plazas
The 38-kilometre Rawalpindi Ring Road, stretching from Baanth to Thalian, has its main carriageway fully constructed but residents will have to wait longer for the route to open. Dawn News
The project, executed by the Frontier Works Organisation (FWO) under the Rawalpindi Development Authority (RDA), is being held back by incomplete toll plazas and weighing stations, with civil works not yet initiated at several points.
While toll plaza foundations have been laid, key components including entry and exit outlets and computerised ticketing systems remain pending. Retaining walls, ramps, and greenbelt landscaping along the corridor are also unfinished. Punjab Ring Road Authority will be responsible for toll collection once operational, charging public transport, goods carriers, and private vehicles at rates modelled on Lahore’s existing ring road.
The project includes five interchanges; Baanth, Maira Mohra, Khasala, Kolian Parr, and Thalian, with an industrial zone planned along the corridor. A separate Rs5 billion Thalian interchange upgrade is scheduled post-opening, though its revised PC-I is not yet finalised.
Commissioner Salman Ghani has directed authorities to prioritise the completion of all outstanding works before inauguration. Read our previous article on Pakistan related news here.
