Canadian Wildfire Smoke Engulfs The US Northeast: 46 Fires Burning Out Of Control Across Ontario And Minnesota Are Sending A Smoke Plume That Could Rival The Infamous June 2023 NYC Event
According to Fox Weather, wildfires burning across western Ontario and northern Minnesota are sending thick smoke plumes toward the Great Lakes and Northeast United States through Thursday, threatening hazardous air quality conditions and the kind of eerie orange skies that turned New York City into a Mars-like landscape in June 2023.
The Canadian Interagency Forest Fire Centre reported 32 new wildfires igniting across western Ontario on Monday alone, with 46 fires now burning out of control across the province. A separate heat dome driving record temperatures across the Northern Plains has intensified multiple fires in Minnesota, including the Camp Fire in Lake County which jumped containment lines and triggered local evacuations.
The FOX Forecast Center warned of a 6–8 hour window where smoke could drop to ground level under the thickest bands of the plume, pushing air quality into the “very unhealthy” to “hazardous” range along the I-95 corridor. Boston, New York City, and Philadelphia are all expected to be hit by Wednesday evening. The situation is compounded by near-record heat descending on the region simultaneously.
This is not a drill or a forecast fringe scenario. The FOX Forecast Center itself drew the direct comparison to the June 2023 event. If the computer models verify, millions of people will need to stay indoors with air purifiers running. The Northeast is about to be reminded that wildfire season is no longer a Western problem.
