Scientists In China Reveal How Megadunes Formed And Evolved

Scientists In China Attribute ‘Topography’ As The Most Prominent Attribute In Shaping And Evolving Megadunes

According to Xinhua Net, Scientists part of the Northwest Institute of Eco-Environment and Resources (NIEER) under the Chinese Academy of Sciences have made incredibly discovery in the field of biomes and topography. They have revealed the reasoning behind the existence of megadunes and how they continue to evolve over period of time.

Firstly for context and distinction, dunes that are more than 100m tall are categorized as megadunes. Due to their relatively permanent shape and structure as well as ancient history, they are considered as icons of the desert biome.

According to statistics, around 97% of the megadunes are found in the Sahara Desert and Arid Asian Regions. This is because of the abundance of sand as well as wind. These two factors play a big role in developing and shaping sand dunes over a period of time. Australia is a prime example of a country that lacks sand dunes because of higher vegetation and less sand support.

However, the biggest factor which the Chinese scientists have attributed to the existence and evolvement of megadunes is topography. Scientists have found that these giant structures exist near mountains or in depressions and terrains that are not flat.
