Traffic Fines: Lahore Businessman Faces Millions
A Lahore businessman, Sadiq Khan, recently discovered over Rs. 2.3 million in traffic fines registered under his name after the Lahore Traffic Police impounded a motorcycle with multiple violations.
Khan, who runs the dealership “Sadiq & Brothers” in Gaddhi Shahu, explained that motorcycles bought on instalments remain registered in his name until the final payment, while fully paid vehicles are transferred to buyers immediately. He claims that over 500 motorcycles registered under him are currently on Lahore roads.
Although Khan forwards fines to instalment buyers when received, many fines never reach him, leaving him technically responsible. He stressed that blocking his NIC or restricting his business won’t solve the problem.
Authorities noted that most fines are now issued through Safe City cameras, and sellers should promptly update the Excise Department to avoid liability. Shahid Ali Gilani, Director of Lahore Excise, warned that owners remain accountable if vehicles are involved in crimes, highlighting the importance of proper documentation during sales.
Khan says he is ready to cooperate with authorities and suggests that fines should be collected from the actual users on the road, ensuring the money reaches the national treasury.
