China-Pakistan Friendship: “Iron Brothers,” “Old Friend,” And “All-Weather Strategic Partner”. Every Word Out Of The Great Hall Of The People Was Diplomatic Code For A Hard Geopolitical Pivot
According to Al Jazeera, Chinese President Xi Jinping hailed China-Pakistan “unbreakable” friendship on Monday as he met Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif at the Great Hall of the People. Xi called Sharif an “old friend” and pledged that China would always prioritise Pakistan in its neighbourhood diplomacy. Sharif responded by calling the two countries “iron brothers” with a relationship “next to none.”
The setting matters more than the script. Sharif arrived accompanied by army chief Asim Munir, the man personally mediating between Washington and Tehran. Pakistan hosted face-to-face US-Iran talks last month. China has been quietly shepherding parallel calls with Gulf officials. In March, both governments issued a five-point initiative calling for the restoration of normal navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.
This is the choreography of a peace broker, not a courtesy visit. Xi praised Islamabad’s “constructive role” in Middle East mediation. The verdict is clear: Pakistan is positioning itself as the only nation that can speak to Washington, Tehran, and Beijing simultaneously and Beijing just publicly endorsed that role with the reinforcement of the China-Pakistan friendship.
