Mowasalat Completes 2,500 Supervised Autonomous Trips Including MOT-to-Old-Doha-Port Run as Phase 2 Prepares No-Driver Robotaxis Across Three Approved Routes
According to The Peninsula Qatar, Mowasalat (Karwa) has successfully completed the first phase of its electric robotaxi trial in Doha under the Ministry of Transport’s supervision; recording a 94% trip success rate with no human intervention required across 2,500 autonomous vehicle runs since August 2025.
The latest demonstration saw a robotaxi complete a round trip between MOT headquarters and the Old Doha Port, the most recent milestone in a programme that launched commercial service via the Karwa app last December. Phase 1 included a trained safety officer in the driver’s seat on every trip, with the reported outcomes exceeding initial safety targets and achieving high passenger satisfaction.
Phase 2 will introduce full remote operation across three pre-tested routes: Old Doha Port to The Gate Mall, Souq Waqif to Sheraton Doha Hotel, and the Museum of Islamic Art to West Bay. Critically, no safety officer will be onboard; the vehicles will operate with only remote monitoring. The transition will progress route by route, with advancement to each new stage conditional on meeting all safety requirements.
The service will become available to the public through the Karwa app once fully safe deployment is verified. The project aligns with Qatar’s Autonomous Vehicles Strategy and Qatar National Vision 2030.
Qatar is not talking about autonomous vehicles anymore. With a 94% success rate, three approved routes, and Phase 2 imminent — it is running them.
