According to Bloomberg, NPR, and Cook Political Report, Iowa Democrats are entering Tuesday’s primary elections buoyed by broad economic dissatisfaction and well-liked centrist candidates expected to prevail in the party primaries. President Trump faces record-low approval ratings, rising gas prices, an unpopular war in Iran, and widespread affordability concerns; conditions that have structurally weakened Republican incumbency in Iowa; a state he has won three consecutive times.
Tuesday’s primary elections will kick off a sprint to November that includes three competitive House races and a Senate race that could help decide control of Congress. The open governor’s race is one of a handful experts say could change hands this fall. Senator Joni Ernst’s retirement has created an open Senate seat.
Democrat Rob Sand leads Republican Randy Feenstra by 12 points in recent polls, and Cook Political’s Amy Walter noted: “Voters are deeply frustrated with Trump and are willing to overlook their antipathy to Democrats in order to put a check on the president.”
For a state where Trump recorded his highest-ever vote share; 55.7% in 2024; a competitive midterm map represents a significant shift in political gravity.
