WBZ-TV Chief Meteorologist Eric Fisher Confirmed The Meteor Explosion Saturday Afternoon As Dozens Of Calls Flooded The Newsroom Reporting The Blast Across Greater Boston
According to CBS Boston / WBZ-TV, a meteor exploded off the coast of Massachusetts on Saturday afternoon, May 30, sending a loud boom across the state that was reported from Boston to as far north as Ipswich.
WBZ-TV Chief Meteorologist Eric Fisher confirmed the event, stating that satellite data tracked the incoming object entering the atmosphere over the South Shore near Boston. Dozens of phone calls flooded the WBZ-TV newsroom from residents reporting the explosion.
A meteor that reaches the lower atmosphere and produces an audible sonic boom is classified as a bolide; a very bright fireball that explodes on atmospheric entry due to rapid decompression. No impact or debris has been reported, and no injuries or structural damage have been confirmed.
The event is consistent with sporadic bolide activity that occurs globally dozens of times per year, though most pass unwitnessed over oceans or uninhabited regions. A similar fireball was confirmed over Michigan earlier this week, suggesting an active period of bolide activity in North American airspace.
