OpenAI Launches Its First Hardware Product: The 13-Key Compact Controller With Six Programmable Layers And A Rotary Encoder Targets OpenAI’s 5 Million Weekly Codex Users
According to The Verge, OpenAI launched the Codex Micro on July 15, 2026; its first branded hardware product; a compact, programmable macro pad built in partnership with boutique keyboard maker Work Louder and designed specifically to supercharge developer workflows inside the Codex AI coding platform.
The Codex Micro is built on Work Louder’s Creator Micro 2 chassis, featuring 13 mechanical MX-style keys, a clickable rotary encoder, a 2D analog joystick, and up to six programmable layers. The device targets OpenAI’s more than 5 million weekly Codex users; developers already using Codex as an autonomous software engineering agent that reads repositories, writes and edits code, runs tests, and proposes pull requests.
The launch marks OpenAI’s first branded hardware release and demonstrates a focus on improving developer productivity rather than introducing new AI capabilities. OpenAI spokesperson Dominik Kundel described it as a keyboard “designed to supercharge people’s Codex usage.”
Connectivity options include USB-C wired and Bluetooth Low Energy on the Pro model. Pricing was not confirmed ahead of launch, though Work Louder’s comparable Creator Micro 2 retails at around $199.
The Codex Micro is explicitly separate from the consumer AI personal device OpenAI is developing with former Apple design chief Jony Ive, which remains on track for a second-half 2026 reveal.
